Get Strong Before You Take To The Streets

I was recently approached to see if I could help a local reporter get fit for the Great North Run. I was more than happy to help. The mistake that most runners make when they enter this type of event is that they try to prepare by running. They don’t realise that some time spent in the gym getting strong will not only improve their running performance but will also help ward off niggly injuries that have a habit of preventing many fun runners even making it to the starting line.I’ll keep you up…See More

180 Prinicple - Do The Exact Opposite

The endurance community have an obsession with developing an 'aerobic base' and I'm just not convinced that it is the only way to get the job done. It's time to free your mind and consider just for a minute a world where intensity rules and developing lungs likedustbin liners through slow, steady high volume workouts are a thing of thepast.....I know it's hard to consider but just read this article and take sometime to consider an alternative approach. The principles of periodisation based on…See More

Ice Ice Baby

I first used Ice baths with my athletes back in 2001 and I've written about the use of cryotherapy and recovery and regeneration extensively, but it seems that every year the public fascination grows and it's usually fed by images and articles in the popular press.

So what is all the fuss about, does it work, and if so how long…

Wobbling Around On Balls Is Daft...

Posted on June 4, 2010 at 8:00 0 Comments

If you want to wobble around on a stability ball then join the circus. If however you want to have a strong and stable core then make sure you add this simple and highly effective sequence of exercises to your training programme.

Hi Richard,

To be honest the stability ball crunch is not an exercise that I would recommend, in fact I rarely programme any flexion patterns (sit ups, crunches etc) as they are largely a waste of time) rare that we actually perform this movement during sport (especially triathlon) and can be potentially problematic.

The key to developing a strong and stable core for triathlon is to make sure you work on 'stablilty' first - ability to resist unwanted movement and stabilise the torso so that you can effectively transfer for through the body without any 'leakage' of energy. I use a simple series of movements that I refer to as a 4-Point Stabilisation Series
" target="_blank"> It's also worth watching this clip where myself and my colleague explain how to condition the 'core'

We are having a few issues on the image uploading front but are working on them.

For now just re-size your image down to a square (175x175 pixles) that should look better but if not i'll get Tom to email you through one tomorrow that will work.
